The Design-Build-Act Event
The WLEC Hate Crime Team were participants in the Design-Build-Act event, hosted by Protection Approaches at the Waterloo Action Centre on 22 June 2026. The event brought together organisations and community groups from across London committed to tackling hate crime, supporting victims, and creating safer, more inclusive communities.
Representatives from a wide range of organisations including One Place East, which provides disability services and support, and Waging Peace, which supports Sudanese asylum seekers, refugees, and the wider community were present. Participants shared how they contribute to addressing hate crime through awareness raising, victim support, encouraging reporting, prevention initiatives, and research.
Hate Crime Victims’ Voices
A key part of the event involved interactive group activities, where participants created a shared reflection collage using images to represent their experiences, learning, achievements, and challenges in tackling hate crime. One message resonated throughout the day: Hate Crime Victims’ Voices must be at the centre of organisational work. Participants emphasised the importance of listening to those affected by hate crime, ensuring they are heard, believed, and supported.
The event also featured inspiring presentations showcasing the work of organisations making a positive impact in their communities. Highlights also included presentations from the Union Chapel Refugees Project, Cultural Education & Hate Prevention Project and initiatives supporting the Latin American community in London, both demonstrating innovative approaches to preventing hate crime through education, community engagement, and empowerment.

The WLEC Hate Crime Team welcomed this additonal opportunity to connect with organisations from diverse communities and explore opportunities for future collaboration in tackling hate crime. Building these partnerships strengthens our ability to provide legal advice and support to individuals affected by hate crimes and hate incidents.
