Hate Crime is an act of hostility against someone because of their real or perceived race, religious belief, sexual orientation, gender identification, age, or disability. Hate motivated incidents and crimes are abhorrent and represent a direct attack on the right of everyone to live without fear of harassment and violence because of who they are. A hate crime can be either hate motivated; a crime committed against you solely on the basis of your protected characteristic or hate aggravated; a crime committed against you with a hateful element to it based on your protected characteristic

Hate Crime can consist of verbal abuse, physical threats or attacks, nasty letters or social media postings, graffiti or other criminal damage, workplace issues which are based on a characteristic, items through the letter box.

Tips: when you call the police tell them it was a hate crime. Too many victims downplay the seriousness because they want to remain calm and be nice. Preserve any evidence, photos of the evidence, envelopes and letters, emails, screenshot it if on Facebook or Twitter
